Patriots’ Matthew Judon Exchange Words With HC Jerod Mayo During Training Camp Practice

Patriots’ edge-rusher Matthew Judon did not take part in the Patriots practice on Monday as he’s “holding in” with hopes of seeking a new contract with the team.

Judon’s decision didn’t sit well with first-year head coach Jerod Mayo and the two exchanged words during practice, before Judon walked off the field.

NBC Sports Boston captured the exchange:

Judon, 31, is set to make $6.5 million in the final year of his current deal before becoming a free agent after the season. He’s clearly worth more and is seeking more security in future years and guaranteed money beyond that.

He alsoĀ held inĀ last season before the Patriots agreed to rework his contract. Judon also voiced his displeasure about his contract on the Shut Up Marc Podcast:

Judon has sat back and watched a number of Patriots receive extensions this offseason, including running back Rhamondre Stevenson, center David Andrews and defensive tackle Christian Barmore. Kendrick Bourne, Anfernee Jennings and Josh Uche were also re-signed.

One issue for Judon is that he’s coming off a season that saw him miss 13 games with torn biceps. That, combined with his age, may make the Patriots less inclined to guarantee him major money in the years to come.

He’s been excellent for New England when healthy, posting 12.5 sacks in 2021 and 15.5 in 2022. The Patriots may want to see him return to that form before committing big bucks, however, while Judon doesn’t seem inclined to wait.
