ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. Says NFL Should Ban Common Defensive Scheme

The National Football League has constantly changed the rules, adding and adapting new rules season after season in favor of offenses and player safety as much as they possibly can.

After the recent downward trend of offensive football that we’ve seen over the past couple of years, some people are calling for more change in the league.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper went on a rant on “Get Up” Thursday morning, calling on Roger Goodell and the NFL to outlaw the “two-high safeties” defensive scheme, because as he says, it is “ruining the game.”

Kiper claims the defensive strategy, which has been used for decades, is taking away from expolsive plays at high rate and making offensive football more boring to watch as quarterbacks are dinking and donking their way down the field, rather than taking deep shots down the field.

After two weeks of play in 2023, QBs passed for 86 touchdowns, and through two weeks in 2024, we’ve seen just 70 passing touchdowns.Â
