REPORT: 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey Now Has Achilles Tendinitis In Both Legs, Return Remains Uncertain

More bad news for Christian McCaffrey.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Christian McCaffrey is now dealing with achilles tendonitis in both knees, which s called bilateral Achilles tendonitis.

“Questions persist about Christian McCaffrey,” Schefter said on Monday. “He’s dealing with Achilles tendonitis, actually in both legs. Both legs, not just one. That’s been an ongoing and recurring issue. So there remains a major question as to when McCaffrey will be back for the 49ers.”

General manager John Lynch addressed the situation during an appearance on KNBR on Friday and called the injury “Bilateral Achilles tendonitis” while explaining what the thought process was putting the running back on injured reserve.

“So the plan was to give it the time to do that,” he said. “And then at some point in a thoughtful way, to ramp him back up. So what he does early and where he goes, he’s got people who work on his body and have for a long time.

“We work and consult with him on that and now Christian’s back here and at some point, we’ll get back, we’ll have to hit certain markers and we’ll try the ramp up and God willing the thing has quieted down and we can build him back up in a really smart and thoughtful way.”

The three-time Pro Bowler reportedly flew to Germany for treatment on this injury.

The 49ers plan on ramping up McCaffrey this week with the hope of gradually increasing his workload over the next few weeks before he’s ready to be activated from Injured Reserve. If McCaffrey suffers a setback again, the question of whether or not he will return this season will be asked.

The 49ers (2-2) will host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at Levi Stadium.
