Derek Carr is retiring from the NFL after 11 seasons, according to a Saturday morning report from Nick Underhill of NOF Network.
“Carr tried all his options to get back on the field and ultimately decided against having another surgery and will retire,” Underhill reported on Saturday morning.
He added the Saints will recoup the money from a contract restructuring the organization agreed to with the quarterback this offseason.
Carr said in a statement announcing his retirement that he made the decision “upon reflection of prayer” and after discussing the situation with his wife, Heather.
Carr experienced pain in his right shoulder in late March while ramping up his preparation for the 2025 season. Medical scans determined that he sustained a labral tear and had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff, the Saints noted in a statement.
After considering surgery, which potentially could have wiped out the entire 2025 campaign, Carr decided to retire as there was no guarantee he would return to the level of strength, function, and performance of play that he was accustomed to, according to the team.
