The contract dispute between Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys has gotten so ugly that ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes that the two sides are “likely headed for a divorce.”
Appearing on ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike, Schefter said that he “feels comfortable in saying” that he didn’t think Parsons would finish his career in Dallas.
“Today I feel comfortable saying I don’t think he’ll finish his career in Dallas. Today, I feel comfortable saying that, now I reserve the right to change my mind all of a sudden, the Cowboys definitely negotiate, but the way things have gotten this off season, the way people are talking, the way things sound, yeah, I would think that there is a real possibility that, if he plays this season, that this potentially could be the last year for Micah in Dallas, yes.”
Parsons hasn’t taken part in training camp and since requesting a trade from the Cowboys, there has been nothing but silence from both sides both at the negotiation table and during practice where Parsons is almost always seen standing alone with a hoodie over his head.
Since as early as 2023, Parsons has been seeking to secure a new contract with the Cowboys. However, the organization has been hesitant to sign Parsons to a new long-term deal, especially since they can use their franchise tag on Parsons to prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent until 2028.
The Cowboys exercised the fifth-year option on Parsons’ rookie contract this year, but will have no choice but to make a decision after the season concludes. Of course, Parsons’ holdout may cause the organization to make a decision sooner than anticipated.
The Cowboys are set to open the 2025 season on Sept. 4th against the Philadelphia Eagles.
