The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 24-20, in the first game of the NFL season on Thursday night but it didn’t without controversy.
After the opening kickoff and before the first play from scrimmage, Eagles defensive lineman Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Despite the fact that video evidence surfaced that showed Prescott spitting in the general direction of Carter, seemingly everyone is in agreement that what Carter did was wrong and disgusting.
ESPN’s Ryan Clark took his criticism of Carter a step further during Friday’s Get Up, referring to Carter as “selfish” and “disgusting” while saying that Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni needs to make an example out of him.
“When Jalen Carter, who is one of the best players in the entire NFL, shows that lack of respect for the game,” said Clark. “Shows that lack of ability to make good decisions early on in the game. That is such a selfish play. Not only is it frickin’ disgusting, right? Not only do you show what a low-level human you are in that moment, but you let the entire team down.”
After pointing out a couple big offensive plays for the Cowboys, Clark continued:
“Those are plays where you immediately think to yourself where is Jalen Carter. And you know where he was? He was at the casinos down the street, probably watching the game because Big Dom had to walk him into the locker room. You cannot do that. And if you’re Nick Sirriani, you have to make an example out of him.”
The NFL is currently investigating the matter further and Carter could face more punishment for the act.
