The Los Angeles Chargers having already begun their head coaching search after firing Brandon Staley last week and one name on their list is Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reported that the Wolverines head coach is gaining interest from the Chargers for their job opening but it’s noted that it’s “unclear” if the feeling is mutual.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler poured some cold water the rumor by reporting that people around the NFL are “skeptical” that the Chargers would give Harbaugh the “power and/or meeting the financial demands” that Harbaugh would be seeking to leave Ann Arbor.
Harbaugh left the NFL in 2014 after he parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers and has yet to come back to the NFL since then but he has interviewed with NFL teams. In 2022, he interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings before they hired Kevin O’Connell. He then met with the Denver Broncos ownership group twice last offseason before the Broncos eventually acquired Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints.
Harbaugh’s status for 2024 likely won’t come into focus until after the Wolverines season comes to an end. They are preparing to play Alabama in the Rose Bowl in the College Football Playoff semifinal on Jan. 1.
Michigan is 84-25 with three consecutive Big Ten titles in nine seasons with Harbaugh as head coach.
