San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey may have accidentally revealed Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the team during an interview with NFL Network last week.
McCaffrey was asked about the Aiyuk situation and while he tried to exclude himself from the discussion, he (may or may not have) accidentally referred to Aiyuk as a “former teammate.”
“That’s not part of my job. It’s not part of my position. Obviously, as a former teammate, or teammate of his in general, any teammate you have, you love and respect them. You want the best for them. As far as the business side of this game goes, it’s always difficult. So, I stay out of it completely.”
Here’s the clip:
The 49ers and Aiyuk’s relationship seems to be tarnished beyond repair. He has requested a trade and by all accounts, the 49ers have granted him a permission to seek it. It’s been reported by numerous outlets that the Patriots, Browns and Steelers have been negotiating with both the 49ers on trade compensation and Aiyuk’s agent on a long term deal. So far, no deal has been made.
Aiyuk earned second-team All-Pro honors last season, as he caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, while averaging 17.9 yards per catch. The 26-year-old is heading into the final season of his rookie contract, so any team trading for him would likely need to be armed with an extension in hand.
