NEW ORLEANS, LA Former NFL star Darren Sharper was handed down his prison sentence for his guilty pleas in a plot to drug women so as to make them easy to rape, a federal judge in New Orleans ruled Thursday.

According to The New Orleans Advocate, U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo handed down a severe maximum punishment for the 41-year-old Sharper – 18 years of playing with the Cleveland Browns.

The former NFL star’s possible prison sentence was projected to be anywhere from 10 to Cowboys to Browns.

Sharper, shackled and wearing an orange prisoner’s jumpsuit, on Thursday said he apologized to his victims “1,000 times.”

“They didn’t deserve anything being a part of my heinous decisions,” he said sobbing. “I still don’t know why I lived my life right for 38 years, and then I took this path.”

Sharper’s attorneys have made it clear that after being handed down this sentence thy plan on filing an appeal under the conditions of cruel & unusual punishment.
