Oakland Athletics’ Bruce Maxwell Becomes First MLB Player To Kneel For National Anthem

Just a day after president Donald Trump made controversial comments regarding National Anthem protesters during a campaign rally in Alabama, Major League Baseball has seen it’s first player kneel for the anthem.

Catcher Bruce Maxwell of the Oakland Athletics took a knee prior to their game against the Rangers Saturday. The rookie, who’s of African-American decent, comes from a military family and chose to remove his cap and place his hand on his heart.

The move comes in solidarity with the numerous NFL players who have continues Colin Kaepernick’s protest of racial inequality and police brutality in the United States.

Maxwell warned shortly after Trump’s speech to not be surprised if players in other sports began kneeling.
