Alex Smith: ‘Odd That Trump Couldn’t Condemn Violent Neo-Nazis, But Lashed Out At NFL Players’

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith lead his team to a 3-0 start Sunday with a 24-10 win over the Chargers, but was asked about President Donald Trumps comments and subsequent protests around the NFL today.

Smith noted he was disappointed in Trump and his tweets that took aim at fellow players who chose to sit or kneel during the anthem.

“You know me, I don’t always feel comfortable talking about a lot of this stuff,” Smith said. “We’re athletes, we’re playing football. But certainly I’d be lying if I said the comments didn’t upset me.

“I’ve been in this league a long time. The league’s not perfect. But I’m definitely proud of a lot of my teammates, coaches, trainers, owners …There are so many good things, great things that go on in this league. … It struck a chord a little bit to see guys get attacked for a peaceful protest.”
“I find that very alarming… This is the same guy who couldn’t condemn violent neo-Nazis but he’s condemning guys that are taking a knee during the national anthem.”
Smith’s referred to Trump’s response to the Charlottesville protest, where the president noted that both sides, including the far right extremists, contained “very fine people.”
Smith has showed support for his former teammate Colin Kaepernick, the man behind the anthem protests still being seen without him in the NFL, saying it “crazy to think he’s not playing.”
