REPORT: Bill Belichick Has Interest In Giants HC Job Amid Patriots Drama

Oh man.

Before Bill Belichick was winning Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots, he was a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants from 1985 to 1990, ad he may be considering filling the team’s head coaching vacancy after reports surfaced of a rift between Belichick, Patriots QB Tom Brady and owner Robert Kraft.

According to Gary Myers of the New York Daily News:

Can Bill Belichick, yes Bill Belichick, be the next coach of the Giants? With a report of turmoil in New England involving him, Tom Brady and Robert Kraft, it certainly seems feasible.

“I’m sure Bill knows this is his last chance to be the Giants coach,” a source close to Belichick said Friday. “Bill sees an opening — an opening to get to the Giants.”

On Friday, an article from Seth Wickersham of ESPN.com detailed a recent rift amongst the Patriots empire that could potentially lead to the end of the Pats dynasty.

Gary Myers also added on his report of interest from Belichick to coach the Giants:

The source has not spoken to Belichick since the story came out, but is very familiar with The Hoodie’s desire to coach the Giants.

The source also said he’s not certain if the reported friction and tension in New England will prompt Belichick to force his way out, but if he does, he said he is certain, “The Giants are the only place he wants to be.”

Moving to New York would allow Belichick to all but likely finish his coaching career where it really took off.

Belichick turns 66 in April and would be inheriting a team that could be drafting a new starting quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick. Belichick could also have Eli Manning under contract for at least two more seasons which essentially is the same dilemma Belichick faced in New England with Jimmy Garrapollo and Tom Brady.

Ironically, the Giants brass: owner John Mara and GM Dave Gettleman were both in Foxboro, interviewing Belichick’s coordinators — Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia.

Would the Giants wait until after the Patriots’ postseason ends to make a run at Belichick knowing they could miss out on some of their current interviewed candidates?

Who knows. But one thing is for certain, there is a soft spot for the Giants organization inside Belichick’s heart:
