REPORT: Denver Broncos Emerge As ‘Front-Runner’ To Hire Sean Payton

Sean Payton is inching closer to returning to the sidelines.

According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, the Denver Broncos have emerged as the “front runners” to hire Sean Payton as their head coach. Maske does note that it’s the “early stages” but signs are pointing Payton going to the Mile High City.

The report adds that Payton likes the Broncos’ stable ownership and would be happy to work with Russell Wilson:

The Broncos were also in on the Jim Harbaugh sweepstakes but with rumors swirling that he could be in line to get a contract extension with the University of Michigan, Broncos seem to have their sights set on hiring Payton.

The other domino in this entire process is the compensation the Broncos would need to give to the Saints to acquire Payton’s contract. The Broncos do have a first round pick (49ers’ 2023 first round pick) that they acquired in the Bradley Chubb trade.

Payton, 59, stepped down as the head coach of the Saints last year and took a year off. He’s now ready to get back on the sidelines and Denver is looking like where it’ll be.
