REPORT: Falcons ‘Could Bench’ Kirk Cousins For Michael Penix Jr. After Game vs Vikings

When the Atlanta Falcons shockingly selected Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, many believed the clock started on Cousins’ time as the starting quarterback in Atlanta.

After getting off to a fast start, Cousins has struggled mightily the past three games, tossing six interceptions without tossing a single touchdown pass. His turnovers legitimately cost Atlanta last weekend against the Los Angeles Chargers. Though the Falcons have not yet made a quarterback change, it sounds like that could happen soon depending on this Sunday’s outcome.

According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, the Falcons believe Penix is “lighting it up” at practice. If they drop this weekend’s game to the Minnesota Vikings because of subpar quarterback play, Penix could potentially replace Cousins in the starting lineup.

“I’ve been told Penix has been lighting it up in practice, so a switch would be justified if they felt like making the move,” Howe reported. “Under no circumstances would I start Penix against the Vikings, but the remaining games against the Raiders, Giants, Commanders and Panthers would be appealing.”

Cousins is completing 67.4 percent of his passes this season for 3,052 yards with 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He signed a four year, $180 million contract this offseason.

If Cousins stinks up the joint against the Vikings, it could be curtains for Kirk in Atlanta.
